AutoFocus explores community, belonging, and the everyday rituals of local car shows. People gather to display the machines they have cared for, exchange stories and knowledge, look, or accompany someone. Cars provide a shared interest around which people with different backgrounds and experiences spend time together.

These photographs attend to the gestures and quieter moments around the vehicles: a conversation, a hand resting on bodywork, a chair brought from home. Pride, memory, and craft give these temporary gatherings a life beyond the display.

An essay within Et In Pluribus Unum, AutoFocus considers what these gatherings, and the different ways people participate in them, might reveal about connection and belonging.
